The priest must be polite without demeaning himself; kind yet strong, attracting souls but setting appropriate limits, tactfully patient, not excessively meek and always, always prudent.
What harms priests greatly is a lack of study; they should never leave study aside, for it enables a thorough and unlimited examination of things. Good books and the saints are the salvation of priests and the love of these will free them from many evils.
Besides the fact that study makes the priest more educated, competent and up to date, and hence able to give timely advice and serve God and souls alone, constant study – I repeat – will free him from an infinite number of dangers...
In order to give time to study, recollection is required, an essential virtue for a priest’s soul and for his relationship with the world.
