For a mother, her children are first of all simply her children, quite independently of any job or role they may have; for Mary the members of Christ are first of all her child, the one she accepted at the foot of the cross (cf Jn 19:26), and quite independently of what they have to do, each in their own way, for the Church and within the Church
I would say that in Mary what comes to light is being, in its purity, from which doing emerges– the many operations – whose essence is neither confined to them, nor is it identified with them.
She is the guardian, with the Father, of freedom and equality within the people of God... Equality is not a reduction of everything to the same level, for its origin is in Trinitarian life, where each one of the Three is the only One – equal therefore to the other Two – each in their own unrepeatable existence.
