12 December - Rediscovering the presbyterate

We have all acquired a concept of, and an individualistic formation in, the priesthood that are influenced by the neglected state of the presbyterate in the post-IV century Church… The ecclesiology of communion and mission requires a discussion about priests using new categories, and above all presents anew a concept of priestly brotherhood with all its theological and pastoral content.

The affirmed truth, though poorly assimilated and lived, is that the sacramental event of ordination creates just one sacramental brotherhood (PO 8). This statement requires a conversion, and new ways of understanding this brotherhood and pastoral choices.

“No priest, therefore, can on his own accomplish his mission in a satisfactory way. He can do so only by joining forces with other priests under the direction of the Church authorities.” (PO 7)
